More pollinators - not cuts in grounds maintenance.

The decline in pollinators is a concern and efforts to encourage them need careful consideration. We do not want to see public grassed areas around housing developments neglected in the name of biodiversity. Supporting pollinators should not be a means of reducing the frequency of routine cutting of grassed areas. All environments require careful management, not official neglect. We have already seen Council grassed areas left uncut far too long after daffodils have flowered, with areas quickly being colonised by unsightly weeds, including docks (dockens) etc.
There is undoubtedly scope for the management of Council owned land to encourage pollinators, with planting of suitable species to attract pollinators, but widespread reduction of grass cutting around housing areas should not be an option.
Residents will need to be convinced of the merits of the proposed actions to support pollinators and that current Council thinking is not just another round of cost cutting.
