It was agreed at the meeting of Stirling Council, which took place on Thursday 4 March 2021, to continue consideration of the petition at the next meeting of the Council, pending the submission of further information.
It is expected that the Petition will be further considered by Council at its meeting on Thursday 29 April 2021.

The Viewforth link road is a multi-million road expansion scheme, projected to increase traffic, carbon emissions, noise and air pollution in the city centre and local communities. It will involve the felling of mature trees which are part of the city's heritage.
This petition asks Stirling Council to reconsider the significant expenditure on the Viewforth Link Road, following the declaration of a Climate and Ecological Emergency and in light of the Covid challenges.
There have been many attempts by local people to engage with the council on this matter, eg, during planning there were 166 local objections, with no meaningful consultation with the communities affected.
We are asking the Council to think again, to think more boldly and to invest in our future.
We Ask Our Council:
- To prioritise investment in a green and just recovery, addressing its declaration of a Climate and Ecological Emergency
- To continue to invest in more robust sustainable transport initiatives throughout Stirling with a strong emphasis on prioritising pedestrians, cyclists, and affordable public transport across rural and urban Stirling
- To work with local people to develop a more ambitious vision: cleaner, healthier and environmentally sustainable, drawing on the strengths and energy of our local communities, small businesses and producers. This vision must meet the challenges set in the Scottish Governments’ National Transport Strategy delivery plan, whilst making effective use of up-to-date evidence and innovation.
- To protect and develop local biodiversity for the benefit of us all and avoid ecological degradation at all costs.

Good morning everyone,
Thank you to all users who have submitted comments on this petition.
We understand this is an important subject, which clearly provokes a lot of discussion among residents – which is good to see on Engage Stirling.
In light of this, we would like to issue a gentle reminder to encourage all users to maintain a level of respect towards each other and be kind. Online debates can get heated very quickly but it is important to be respectful of the opinions of others.
The Council monitors and moderates this platform in line with our guidance on the Acceptable Use of Social Media and will respond accordingly to any breaches of that guidance to ensure vibrant, open and healthy discussion is protected.

I have a great idea. Let's build more cycle lanes such as those recently completed to the south of the city! That will surely satisfy the "thousands" of cyclists who already use them! (Anybody ever seen a cyclist on them???) At least we would be wasting public money in a consistent way! Shame to spend it on things we may really need (bin collections??, Pot hole repairs??).

@Bruce Whittaker Correct Sir. I travel on that road several times a week. It's annoying that I very rarely see a cyclist and when I do they ride on the road, not the cycle track. Riding abreast, holding up vehicular traffic with an empty cycle lane right alongside them.

We need to be reducing road traffic, not diverting it to another route causing great disruption to the land and all the nature living on that land. It would also be costing a lot of money which would be better put to use with improving what we have.

Agree this is not a good option.
Increased traffic on this route represents a serious pedestrian safety risk. There is regular and major pedestrian flow of schoolchildren, dog walkers etc across the route to the Park. Installing pedestrian crossings eg at Dumbarton Road, Queens Rd/Victoria Place mini roundabout and at the main entrance to the Park would be minimum requirement for safety and these would slow traffic flow. Frustrated drivers would use residential streets as cut throughs resulting in further safety issues on quiet streets not designed for through traffic.

All correspondents have written articulate comments and responses. Well done everybody.
It's clear that the road is not going to improve the city's traffic problems, it'll just move things about a bit at great cost, huge inconvenience and it will adversely change peoples lives. (Shifting deck chairs on the Titanic) Admittedly at no cost to the council as it's Westminster etc cash. So what's the council up to ?
"We've got to spend it or we'll lose it" is part of the reason, but doesn't make it valid.
Planners will move on to other jobs and council members will leave the council for whatever reason. Tomorrow's people of Stirling will be left with the legacy of these decision makers of today.
There seems little doubt about it going ahead; the council seems to get it's controversial way frequently. Perhaps the decision makers can be brought back to see the mess they've made and somehow pay the price. Sadly it doesn't work like that !

Folks, I am extremely encouraged by the amount of engagement in this post. It surely proves that the issue is of real importance, on both sides of the issue, to many residents.
The need for the road needs to be discussed with the community and Councillors and all views need to be taken into account. Talking is good but listening is even better!!

The council need to abort this link road . Councillor Kane badly key didn’t his communities in abstaining the vote of the people.
Council funds can be used on better more relevant projects . eg Re generating the town centre . Keeping the city clean .

Since the closure of the dual carriageway from customs roundabout to craigs roundabout the past couple of days maybe the money shpuld be spent there. 2 days closed due to icicles!!

I am utterly dismayed to find out that Stirling Council tend to go ahead with this major road building plan. I have recently moved from a lifetime in Glasgow where the evidence is that new roads generate more traffic, causing more pollution. And the felling of mature trees needlessly at this point in the planet's history is appalling. I urge the council to rethink this. There are many better ways to spend the proposed sum for the benefit of the community.
