Albert Place and Dumbarton Road East

Background

The Forth Valley College Route proposal promotes reduction in vehicle speeds by changing the nature of Albert Place and altering the junctions at Upper Craigs/Dumbarton Road East and Dumbarton Road/Albert Place. These streetscape alterations will promote use of the signed inner ring road via Queens Road and Snowdon Place for through traffic travelling west to and from the city centre. The proposal also seeks to reduce road speeds by narrowing the road cross section enhancing the residential nature of the streets. This visual change and constraint on the driver will lead to the drivers reducing speed, promoting a safer environment for non-road users.

Bus Gates

An option to reduce through traffic along Albert Place would be the introduction of bus gates.

View the options below that can be considered subject to further consultation with the community.

Below are four possible locations for bus gates. The blue circle would be the location of a bus gate for West bound traffic, and the pink circle is the proposed location for a bus gate for East bound traffic.

The dashed lines represent the route which would be restricted to buses, taxis and cycles from the point of the bus gate. There are other side streets that would allow access to Albert Place for those that require access to properties, venues or businesses. The idea of bus gate reinforces the restriction of through traffic, providing a safer street for cyclists, a more pleasant environment for the residents and businesses, and for walking.

From the four options below, we would suggest Option 3 would be most suitable for this location, allowing access along Albert Place up to Allan Park from the West. Vehicles travelling from the town to the West would be diverted back to the town centre via Allan Park creating an inconvenient through route for West bound traffic.

For Option 1, 2 and 3, to successfully ensure the route is inconvenient for through traffic, we would need to explore restricting movements to some of the side streets that may be used as short cuts to avoid the bus gate.

There are other options that could be explored, and we would welcome your suggestions.

Do you agree that this would be a good intervention to reduce traffic on Albert Place?
