Bridge of Allan to Dunblane

Phase 2 of the project will connect Bridge of Allan and Dunblane. The project is being part-funded by the Stirling & Clackmannanshire City Region Deal. A bid for the remaining funding required will be submitted to Transport Scotland.

The suggested alignment follows the A9 to Keir Roundabout, before continuing north on the B8033, where the existing southbound carriageway could be converted to an active travel corridor and the existing northbound carriageway could become two-way for vehicles. The route is planned to extend as far as the Dunblane Centre roundabout.

Analysis and Feedback

1 June 2025 23:00 - No end date

As part of the Council’s work to develop active travel routes in the area, we asked people to share their views on a suggested route between Bridge of Allan and Dunblane. Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide feedback and ideas.

The Engage page received a total of 130 comments. These have been collated and the key themes are reported below.

Addressing your concerns

The feedback highlighted a number of issues. Each is addressed below.

Won't reducing the road to single carriageway will make congestion worse? Keir Roundabout is already difficult to navigate.

Any changes to Keir Roundabout will be agreed with Transport Scotland as it is their asset. Before we commit to the proposals we will carry out traffic modelling to understand the impact on the roundabout. The B8033 can also still widen to two lanes on the southbound approach to provide queueing capacity.

Why can’t the Glen Road be improved instead?

The Glen Road suffers from various issues including landslips and subsidence. The route is also within a Site of Special Scientific Interest, meaning the area is protected, which limits what improvements could be made. Even if the Glen Road was improved, the route has steep sections and is secluded and indirect, which makes the route unappealing and unsafe for year-round leisure and commute cycling.

How will cars access M&S and the industrial estate if the southbound carriageway is removed?

Access to and from M&S and Duckburn will be maintained.

Why doesn’t the route continue to Fourways Roundabout?

We agree that continuing to Fourways Roundabout would provide a better, more connected route. The funding available for active travel schemes is limited, so the longer the route we try to deliver, the tighter our budget will be. As a result, we are focusing on delivering the section as far as the Dunblane Centre Roundabout. The section from the Dunblane Centre to Fourways Roundabout remains on our priority list.

It is not safe for cyclists to use Keir Roundabout

We agree; the cycleway would be fully segregated to avoid interactions between vehicles and cyclists at the roundabout.

People in Dunblane don’t travel locally for work, this won’t benefit commuters

According to the 2022 census, 36% of employed residents in Dunblane (excluding those working from home) travel less than 10 km to work - a distance that can be cycled in around 40 minutes. With proper infrastructure, this opens up real potential for active commuting. The proposed route to Causewayhead, connecting onwards to Stirling, would provide a safe and direct option for those commuting from Dunblane to Stirling and nearby areas.

Why doesn't this page provide more information?

This is the first stage of public consultation where we are looking to understand the public’s view of the current preferred route and the project is still at an early stage. We will continue engaging as the proposals develop and provide more detail when we can.
