Proposal

This consultation asks your views on the following three points:

Buchanan Primary School is permanently closed on 24 June 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Pupils from Buchanan Primary School catchment area will receive their education at Drymen Primary School from session 2022/23.
The catchment area of Drymen Primary School is permanently extended to include the catchment area of Buchanan Primary School from 25 June 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The consultation is now open for you to leave comments and feedback on the proposal.

Following the Public Meetings on 19 October 2021, a reminder that you can also make responses to the consultation by writing to the Interim Head of Education:

Please make all responses to the consultation by the closing date, 10 November 2021.

In addition to the above, we are also offering:

A ‘drop-in session’ at the Memorial Hall, Milton of Buchanan, G63 0JE on Monday 1 November 2021 between 1.30–3.00 pm. Members of the public can attend and speak with an Officer for information, to ask questions or provide a response. Procedures will be in place to help ensure health & safety at this time.

Antje Peters5 years ago As it becomes apparent that Buchanan Primary School Closure will be permanent there exists, within the community, anxiety as to the future of a building and its grounds that has been a core of people's lives here for many decades.Many I have spoken to wish for an open space for anyone living within Buchanan to meet, connect and become creative in a new process of thinking about a sustainable future for our community.Buchanan finds itself surrounded by tourism and commercial interest within a national park. Our aging community, in the absence of a local shop, pub or school gates suffers from a lack of places where they would naturally meet and connect. As a result, some members of our community are increasingly feeling marginalized. We are losing our sense of community, neighbourhood and ability to flourish.With the permission of Stirling Council, a small group of us are currently making use of the gardens of our former local school in a first move to bring people together. Growing vegetables, flowers and new ideas we are seeking further opportunities for our small community to thrive and exploring possibilities to harness the potential within our community.

Rosie Allan5 years ago Closing our Buchanan Primary School, we here who live on this road, from Drymen right on up to Rowardennan where the road stops, all (well, most of us) know each other very well. This is a community, Our Community.The school has been for generations a place for meeting at the school gate, for news and catch-ups and we all miss that, it would be nice to grow and develop that again in conjunction with the Memorial Hall and the Church.The fabric of our community is breaking up, we have lost so many facilities, our wee School, our Bank, our Post Office and recently our Minister (due to retirement). As a community we are very keen to stem the flood of all these losses. To meet up, for the well being of our own folk here in Buchanan to meet, talk, and do Stuff together.

Margaret Milner5 years ago Buchanan Memorial Hall began serving the local community in 1927, when the Hall was created as a war memorial by the vicar of the local Church. The Church has had free use of the Hall ever since. The Hall is managed by a committee of representatives of the organizations that use the Hall on a regular basis. In 2017 the Hall became a Charity with the main purpose of providing appropriate recreational facilities for local residents and organizations to carry out activities on a regular basis. To achieve this purpose the Hall’s committee: 1. Employs a booking system to regulate the use of the Hall and its facilities by all interested parties 2. Applies for funding to forward the use of the Hall by residents and organisations 3. Liaises with Stirling Council to ensure the upkeep of the Hall 4. Decides arrangements as necessary to allow the continued use of the hall by local residents and organisationsThe Hall does not agree with the closure of the Buchanan Primary School and recognizes that for the local community to thrive it needs families that will put down roots, contribute to the local economy as well as the community by raising their families here. Without a school, the community cannot attract new families and move forward. The Hall also recognizes that the school building is an asset to the local community, and fundamentally sees the school building as part of the Hall’s own development. The two buildings are fundamentally a ‘joined’ space. As the Hall moves from its redevelopment as a charity to generating additional income via new business models in these troubled economic times, the school building could provide the needed facilities and space to meet the challenges of new business models particularly professional catering facilities. The environment of the Hall would be greatly affected if the school building was removed by an organization outside the community that intended to redevelop the site. While the Hall Committee agrees that for the growth and development of the local community the Buchanan Primary School is reopened, the school building remaining an asset in the community is crucial for that continued growth and development.
